ASSOCIATE LECTURER/ LECTURER -New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP)

As part of the new Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) sponsored by the Department of Higher Education and Training in terms of the Staffing South Africa’s Universities Framework (SSAUF) Applications are invited for the above contract “New Generation of Academics Programme” (nGAP) Associate Lecturer or Lecturer position. To apply for this position, you must be currently registered for, or recently received, a PhD in a School of Chemistry or Biochemistry at a South African University.
The most important features of the nGAP programme:
1. the nGAP covers a six-year period, comprising of a 3-year development programme, plus 3 years induction after successful completion of the Development Programme; and continuing permanent employment at the appointing institution thereafter;
2. enables the successful candidate to immediately take up a permanent lecturer position and earn a full lecturer salary whilst you study;
3. the successful candidate will be firmly factored into the long-term staffing plans of the department right from the outset;
4. the appointment will be governed by contracts that clearly spell out the expectations, obligations, roles, and responsibilities of the university and of the newly appointed academic;
5. the successful candidate will study for a doctorate, or undertake post-doctoral work with substantially reduced teaching responsibilities, while studying; and
6. the successful candidate will be provided mentoring in order to nurture his/her academic career;
7. provides support for an international mobility experience
Minimum Requirements:
To be eligible for selection for an nGAP post, applicants must meet the following criteria, in addition to meeting criteria specified by the university:
· show interest in becoming an academic;
· be 40 years or younger;
· show evidence of eligibility to undertake postgraduate study at doctoral level or postdoctoral level;
· be willing to commit to placement at the appointing university for the full 6 years of the programme;
· The minimum required qualification is an MSc in Chemistry or Biochemistry, preferably with undergraduate training in both.
· The candidate appointed should preferably have experience and an interest in biocatalysis and green chemistry, organic synthetic chemistry and enzymology.
· The candidate should preferably have research activities that are synergistic with the current capacities in organic synthetic and medicinal chemistry in the School of Chemistry, (www.wits.ac.za/science/schools/chemistry/research/).
· The incumbent will collaborate closely with the School of Molecular and Cell Biology.
Job Summary:
Duties: The candidate will be required to give lectures (mainly to first year classes) and tutor as necessary, as well as assisting the School with the organisation and running of practical laboratory sessions. In addition, the incumbent will be required to complete his or her PhD during this period (if not already awarded) and perform research and publish in ISI rated journals.
Key Performance Areas:
Overall responsibilities will include the teaching of general chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and the establishment of a research programme.
Key Competencies:
The ability to work in a team environment would be a strong advantage. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential.
