Artisan (Mechanic & Fitter) in the Engineering Department in Rhodes University
Purpose
To ensure that all heavy and light mechanical and engineering equipment is maintained including the Rhodes vehicle fleet.
Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Qualified Artisan (i.e., must have completed an apprenticeship or learnership as a mechanic and or fitter – NQF Level 4) plus approximately 4 years’ relevant experience where such experience includes: –
- Previous experience in an engineering environment including vehicle maintenance
- Previous experience as a Mechanic and fitter
- Experience in fault diagnosis, maintenance and repair of heavy and light engineering equipment as well as light and heavy vehicles, access control systems, gate automation, electric fencing and vehicle alarms.
- Proven experience in welding specifically Arc welding, co2 welding, gas welding as well as tig welding
- Knowledge of refrigeration and air-conditioning would be an advantage
- Experience as a machinist would be an advantage
- At least 2 years’ supervision experience OR being in possession of an RU supervision certificate
- Previous experience in safety and working within the regulations laid down by OH& S Act
- A valid code 8 driver’s licence will be a distinct advantage. If the incumbent does not have a valid code 8 driver’s license, he/she must be prepared to acquire one within the first year of employment.
- This post is required to be on standby and as such the incumbent must be able and prepared to be on standby for both engineering and mechanical services.
Please note that this appointment will be made in line with the requirements of the Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998, as amended and the University’s recruitment and selection policies and equity strategies. The initial focus will be on equity candidates.
In terms of Immigration Legislation (Act No. 13 of 2002 & Regulations) as amended, international staff members (non-SA citizens) have to comply with the provisions of the Act. This therefore means that the period of employment to non-SA citizens will be guided by the validity period of the work permit. In line with legislation governing employment of foreign nationals, employment contracts will be offered on the basis that a development plan would be implemented for the transfer of skills to a South African resident. The onus is on candidates to ensure that they are in possession of a valid work permit before the commencement of employment at the University, failing which the employment with Rhodes University will be terminated.

Remuneration (Grade 10):
Basic Salary Provident Fund: R288 683
Cost to Company Approximately: R391 735
