About University of Limpopo UL Faculty of Management and Law
Message from the Executive Dean: Prof O Sibanda
We live in interesting times. This is how I can sum up the academic year 2020, which introduced us to what many now call our “new normal” as we had to conduct our core business amid the Covid-19 pandemic. All said and done, I would like to welcome you to the Faculty of Management and Law (FML) as we traverse together academic year 2021! At FML, nested in a university that has great tradition – the University of Limpopo (UL) – we are emphatically committed to both the highest level community engagement, teaching, and equally high-quality research and innovation. By virtue of our tradition and our mission, we are passionately dedicated to our core business as a faculty at UL. As part of a university grounded in the timeless commitment to ‘Finding Solutions for Africa’, we teach students to think innovatively, creatively, analytically and broadly – to seek out new ideas in both the pursuit to become lifelong learners and help find solutions to challenges in their communities and Africa in general. Part of our DNA has been to produce some of the country’s pre-eminent alumnus and leaders in the different professions and communities.
Constituted by four Schools – the School of Economics and Management (SEM), the School of Law (SoL), the School of Accountancy (SoA), and the Turfloop Graduate School of Leadership (TGSL) – the FML offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Accountancy, Business Management, Development Planning, Economics, Human Resources Management, Law, and Public Administration. At the FML, we know and appreciate that our students deserve a top-notch and fully accredited curriculum that prepares them for the professional environment and better positions them to meet community needs.
Our flagship programmes include TGSL and the Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy (CTA/PGDA), which provide the opportunity for South Africa to increase the proportion of Africans who are in the Chartered Accountants profession from around 10% to a more reasonable percentage. The Faculty prepares graduates to take their civic duties seriously and contribute to the knowledge economy and resolution of society’s pressing challenges. Our aim as a Faculty is to develop graduates who are well-equipped for the world of work, and able to influence the social, political, economic and technological spheres of our South African society and the globe. In the FML, your opportunities are endless. For example, over the years, the Faculty was a host to the University of Limpopo’s partnership with Leuphana University of Lüneburg (Germany) for a programme called Student Training for Entrepreneurial Promotion (STEP). STEP is an entrepreneurial training for students that aims to develop students’ skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue an entrepreneurial career. In the training, the students learn step-by-step to start their businesses. Through STEP students are equipped with effective means of creating jobs for themselves and other people in the community.
I invite you to join our community and participate in the richness of a mission committed to scholarship, public service, and excellence. I also invite you to learn more about our Faculty. Most of all, I invite you to learn how we—in the words of our University’s motto— are doing our national and continental duty to “Finding Solutions for Africa” through both our professional and academic programmes offered in the following schools:
