The Wits School of Governance (WSG) is Africa’s premier school of governance. As a postgraduate school within the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, the WSG provides high-quality education for leaders and decision-makers in the public and development fields. It offers postgraduate academic qualifications in various fields including public policy, public finance, monitoring and evaluation, and political economy of development. Its multidisciplinary staff and associates are drawn from South Africa and the continent and focus on teaching, research and policy advice.
Among the initiatives of the WSG is the Postdoctoral Research Programme (PDRF) which is informed by the strategy of the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management (in which the school is located) and the University as whole. It is intended to bolster research capacity to enhance research productivity. The school is seeking to appoint 3 Post-Doctoral Research Fellows (PDRF) for a period of two years. Through this programme, the school seeks to attract candidates from various intellectual backgrounds within the area of governance and management, both nationally and internationally.
The school sees the postdoctoral research fellowship as a transitory phase, which bridges the gap between the completion of a PhD and formal employment. That’s why at the school, we are committed to enriching the experiences of Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDRF) and will ensure that during the two-year period the PDRF is exposed to:
1. Teaching a course in proposal development
2. Teaching a course in quantitative and qualitative research methods
3. Teaching one of the courses at Postgraduate Diploma and Masters levels
4. Supervising or co-supervising with a senior academic one student at master’s level
5. Doing own research and generating publications using excellent library facilities both within the school and also in the various Wits campuses.
6. Attending conferences and seminars to present research papers.
7. The work of administration Committees and Research panels in the school.
Brief Description
The reason why the PDRF are involved in limited teaching and administration is to hone research and professional skills to prepare them for future academic or professional endeavours. The Wits School of Governance offers a very interesting space for intellectual growth and development as well as support from colleagues, visiting research fellows and research associates.
Requirements:
Post-doctoral fellowships at the school are intended for individuals who are still in the first five years of completion of their PhDs. The key requirement is a completed PhD or D Lit et Phil in governance/Management and related fields. The school offers a reasonable PDRF stipend which gets paid to the candidate on a monthly basis.
